A LIMERICK mother-of-two received a suspended sentenced of four months in jail this week after pleading guilty to stealing goods worth €51.

Jacqueline Martin (33) of 4 Davitt Street, Johnsgate, Limerick City, pleaded guilty before Limerick District Court to stealing three electric razors from a city pharmacy on July 2 last.

The court heard that after viewing CCTV footage from the pharmacy when the theft was reported the day afterwards, Gardaí went to Ms Martin’s house where she co-operated.

All of the goods were recovered intact and in a saleable condition, the court was told.

The court heard that Ms Martin has 45 previous convictions for offences including stealing, assault, public order, road traffic offences and failing to appear in court.

Her solicitor, Edel Ryan told the court that Ms Martin “had a challenging start in life…she had to fend for herself at an early age.”

Ms Ryan pointed out that the most recent of her convictions had been for motoring offences and the last theft conviction was some years ago.

“She’s trying to break the cycle,” Ms Ryan said.

But Judge Marie Keane said the Limerick woman “has an horrendous record.”

She imposed a four month jail sentence and suspended if for two years.
